Surah Al-Baqarah — Verse 89

وَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ كِتَـٰبٌ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ وَكَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم مَّا عَرَفُوا۟ كَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ فَلَعْنَةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
Walamma jaahum kitabunmin AAindi Allahi musaddiqun lima maAAahumwakanoo min qablu yastaftihoona AAala allatheenakafaroo falamma jaahum ma AAarafoo kafaroobihi falaAAnatu Allahi AAala alkafireen

Saheeh International
And when there came to them a Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] from Allāh confirming that which was with them - although before they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved - but [then] when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so the curse of Allāh will be upon the disbelievers.

When a Scripture came to them from God confirming what they already had, and when they had been praying for victory against the disbelievers, even when there came to them something they knew [to be true], they disbelieved in it: God rejects those who disbelieve.

And when there cometh unto them a scripture from Allah, confirming that in their possession - though before that they were asking for a signal triumph over those who disbelieved - and when there cometh unto them that which they know (to be the truth) they disbelieve therein. The curse of Allah is on disbelievers.

And when there comes to them a Book from Allah, confirming what is with them,- although from of old they had prayed for victory against those without Faith,- when there comes to them that which they (should) have recognised, they refuse to believe in it but the curse of Allah is on those without Faith.

And when there came to them a Book from Allah, which confirms what was with them,- while earlier, they used to seek help against those who disbelieved, - yet when there came to them that which they did recognize, they denied it. So the curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers.

And when there came to them (the Jews), a Book (this Qur’ân) from Allâh confirming what is with them [the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)], although aforetime they had invoked Allâh (for coming of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) in order to gain victory over those who disbelieved, then when there came to them that which they had recognised, they disbelieved in it. So let the Curse of Allâh be on the disbelievers.
Abul A'la Maududi (Tafhim)
And now that there has come to them a Book from Allah, how are they treating it? Even though it confirms the Truth already in their possession, and even though they had prayed for victory against the unbelievers, and yet when that Book came to them – and they recognized it – they refused to acknowledge its Truth. Allah’s curse be upon the unbelievers.

قوله تعالى: {وَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ كِتَابٌ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِمَا مَعَهُمْ وَكَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ مَا عَرَفُوا كَفَرُوا بِهِ فَلَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ (89)} [البقرة: 89].
1 - عن ابن عباس -رضي الله عنهما- قال: "إن اليهود كانوا يستفتحون على الأوس والخزرج برسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - قبل مبعثه، فلما بعثه الله من العرب كفروا به، وجحدوا ما كانوا يقولون فيه.
فقال لهم معاذ بن جبل، وبشر بن المعرور: يا معشر اليهود، اتقوا الله وأسلموا، فقد كنتم تسفتحونَ علينا بمحمد - صلى الله عليه وسلم -، ونحن أهل شرك، وتخبروننا أنه مبعوث، وتصفونه لنا بصفته. فقال سلام بن مشكم: ما جاءنا بشيء نعرفه، وما هو بالذي كنا نذكر لكم".
فأنزل الله هذه الآية ¬أخرجه ابن جرير في تفسيره: 1/ 410 - 411، وأبو نعيم في الدلائل: 1/ 82 برقم 43، وعزاه السيوطي في لباب النقول: 21، لابن أبي حاتم، وفيه محمد بن أبي محمد المدني مولى آل زيد بن ثابت، مجهول، ولكن الحديث حسن لشاهده الذي سيأتي بعده.¥.
2 - ومن حديث عاصم بن عمر بن قتادة عن رجال من قومه قالوا: (إن مما دعانا إلى الإسلام، مَعَ رحمةِ الله تعالى وهُداهُ لنا، لَما كنا نسمع من رجال يهود، وكنا أَهلَ شِركِ وأوثان، وكانوا أهل كتاب، عندهم علمٌ ليس لنا، وكانت لا تزال بيننا وبينهم شرور، فإِذا نِلنا منهم بعضَ ما يكرهون، قالوا لنا: إنه قد تقارب زمانُ نبيِ يُبعثُ الآن نقتلكم معه قَتْلَ عادٍ وإِرم. فكنا كثيراً ما نسمع ذلكَ منهم، فلما بَعثَ الله رسوله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أجبناه، حين دعانا إلى الله تعالى، وعرفنا ما كانوا يتوعدوننا به، فبادرناهم إليه، فآمنا به وكفروا به، ففينا وفيهم نَزل هؤلاء الآيات من البقرة: {وَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ كِتَابٌ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِمَا مَعَهُمْ وَكَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ مَا عَرَفُوا كَفَرُوا بِهِ فَلَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ (89)} ¬أخرجه ابن إسحاق كما في السيرة النبوية (1/ 270)، ومن طريقه ابن جرير في تفسيره: 1/ 440، والبيهقي في الدلائل: 2/ 75 - 76، وقد صرح ابن إسحاق بالتحديث؛ فالحديث حسن، وله شاهد من الحديث السابق.¥.
