Surah At-Tawbah — Verse 79

ٱلَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ ٱلْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ ۙ سَخِرَ ٱللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Allatheena yalmizoona almuttawwiAAeenamina almu'mineena fee assadaqati wallatheenala yajidoona illa juhdahum fayaskharoona minhumsakhira Allahu minhum walahum AAathabun aleem

Saheeh International
Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them - Allāh will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
It is they who criticize the believers who give freely and those who can only give a little with great effort: they scoff at such people, but it is God who scoffs at them- a painful punishment awaits them.
Marmaduke Pickthall
Those who point at such of the believers as give the alms willingly and such as can find naught to give but their endeavours, and deride them - Allah (Himself) derideth them. Theirs will be a painful doom.
Abdullah Yusuf Ali
Those who slander such of the believers as give themselves freely to (deeds of) charity, as well as such as can find nothing to give except the fruits of their labour,- and throw ridicule on them,- Allah will throw back their ridicule on them: and they shall have a grievous penalty.
Mufti Taqi Usmani
(Among the hypocrites, there are) those who taunt the believers who voluntarily give alms and have nothing but their hard earnings; still they mock at such people. Allah mocks at them, and for them there is a painful punishment.
Al-Hilali & Khan
Those who defame such of the believers who give charity (in Allâh’s Cause) voluntarily, and such who could not find to give charity (in Allâh’s Cause) except what is available to them - so they mock at them (believers); Allâh will throw back their mockery on them, and they shall have a painful torment.
Abul A'la Maududi (Tafhim)
[9:79] He also knows (the rich that are niggardly) who taunt the believers that voluntarily give alms, they scoff at those who have nothing to give except what they earn through their hard toil. Allah scoffs at them in return. A grievous chastisement awaits them.

قال تعالى: {الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ سَخِرَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (79)} [التوبة: 79].
206 - عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ - رضي الله عنه - قَالَ: أُمِرْنَا بِالصَّدَقَةِ، وَكُنَّا نُحَامِلُ، فَتَصَدَّقَ أَبُو عَقِيلٍ بِنِصْفِ صَاعٍ، قَالَ: وَجَاء إِنْسَانٌ بِشَيْءٍ أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُ، فَقَالَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ: إِنَّ اللهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ صَدَقَةِ هَذَا، وَمَا فَعَلَ هَذَا الْآخَرُ إِلَّا رِيَاءً، فَنَزَلَتْ: {الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ} ولم يلفظ بشر بالمطوعين ¬أخرجه البخاري برقم: 1415، 1416، 2273، 4668، 4669، ومسلم برقم: 1018، والنسائي في الصغرى: 5/ 59 - 60 برقم: 2529، 2530، والكبرى برقم: 2309، 11223، وابن ماجه برقم: 4155، وابن خزيمة برقم: 2453، والطيالسي برقم: 609، والطبراني في الكبير: 17/ 200 برقم: 535 - 536، والبيهقي:4/ 136، وابن حبان برقم: 3338، 3376، والواحدي في أسباب النزول: ص 254. وقد جاء عن ابن عباس، موصولاً، ومن مرسل قتادة شبيهاً من هذا، وأخرجهما ابن جرير في التفسير: 10194 - 10195، وأسانيدها صحيحة.¥.
