Surah Ali 'Imran — Verse 152

وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَعْدَهُۥٓ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُم بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَـٰزَعْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ وَعَصَيْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَآ أَرَىٰكُم مَّا تُحِبُّونَ ۚ مِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۚ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ ۖ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا عَنكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Walaqad sadaqakumu AllahuwaAAdahu ith tahussoonahum bi-ithnihi hattaitha fashiltum watanazaAAtum fee al-amri waAAasaytummin baAAdi ma arakum ma tuhibboonaminkum man yureedu addunya waminkum man yureedual-akhirata thumma sarafakum AAanhum liyabtaliyakumwalaqad AAafa AAankum wallahu thoofadlin AAala almu'mineen
Translations of this verse 7
Saheeh International
And Allāh had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them [i.e., the enemy] by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet (ﷺ)] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the believers.

God fulfilled His promise to you: you were routing them, with His permission, but then you faltered, disputed the order, and disobeyed, once He had brought you within sight of your goal- some of you desire the gains of this world and others desire the world to come- and then He prevented you from [defeating] them as a punishment. He has now forgiven you: God is most gracious to the believers.

Allah verily made good His promise unto you when ye routed them by His leave, until (the moment) when your courage failed you, and ye disagreed about the order and ye disobeyed, after He had shown you that for which ye long. Some of you desired the world, and some of you desired the Hereafter. Therefore He made you flee from them, that He might try you. Yet now He hath forgiven you. Allah is a Lord of Kindness to believers.

Allah did indeed fulfil His promise to you when ye with His permission Were about to annihilate your enemy,-until ye flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the booty) which ye covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you from your foes in order to test you but He forgave you: For Allah is full of grace to those who believe.

Allah has surely fulfilled His promise to you when you, with His will, were killing them off, until you showed weakness and disputed in the matter and disobeyed after He had shown you what you liked.Among you there were some who were seeking the mundane, and among you there were others who were seeking the Hereafter. After that, He reversed your position against them, so that He may test you. Of course, He has forgiven you. Allah is All-Gracious to the believers.

Abul A'la Maududi (Tafhim)
Allah surely fulfilled His promise (of succour) when you were slaying them by His leave until the moment when you flagged and quarrelled among yourselves about the matter, and acted against the order of (the Prophet). Soon He showed you what you had intensely desired - for some among you sought this world and some of you sought the Next. Thereupon, in order to put you to a test He turned you away from your foes. Still He pardoned you after that for Allah is Bounteous to those who believe.

قال تعالى: {وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُمْ بِإِذْنِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ وَعَصَيْتُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا أَرَاكُمْ مَا تُحِبُّونَ مِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا عَنْكُمْ وَاللَّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (152)} [آل عمران: 152].
83 - عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ - رضي الله عنه -: أَنَّ النِّسَاءَ كُنَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ خَلْفَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، يُجْهِزْنَ عَلَى جَرْحَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ، فَلَوْ حَلَفْتُ يَوْمَئِذٍ رَجَوْتُ أَنْ أَبَرَّ، إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنَا يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا، حَتَّى أَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَز وَجلّ: {مِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ} فَلَمَّا خَالَفَ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -، وَعَصَوْا مَا أُمِرُوا بِهِ، أُفْرِدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فِي تِسْعَةٍ، سَبْعَةٍ مِنْ الْأَنْصارِ، وَرَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، وَهُوَ عَاشِرُهُمْ .... ) ¬أخرجه أحمد (1/ 463) برقم: 4414، وصححه أحمد شاكر، قلت: إسناده حسن لأن رجاله ثقات إلا عطاء بن السائب صدوق اختلط، لكن رواية حماد بن سلمة عنه قبل الاختلاط كما في التهذيب: 7/ 205 - 207.¥.
84 - عَنِ ابنِ عَبَّاسٍ -رضي الله عنهما- أَنَّهُ قَالَ: مَا نَصَرَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فِي مَوْطِنٍ، كَمَا نَصَرَ يَوْمَ أُحُد، قَالَ: فَأَنْكَرْنا ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ مَنْ أَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ!!! كتابُ اللهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى، إِنَّ الله عَز وَجلّ يَقُولُ فِي يَوْمِ أُحُد: {وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُمْ بِإِذْنِهِ}.
يَقُولُ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: وَالحَسُّ: الْقَتْلُ {حَتَّى إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ} إِلَى قَولِه: {وَلَقَدْ عَفَا عَنْكُمْ وَاللَّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} وَإِنَّمَا عَنَى بِهَذَا الرُّمَاةَ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أَقَامَهُمْ فِي مَوْضِعٍ، ثم قال: "احمُوا ظُهُورَنَا، فَإِنْ رَأَيتُمُونَا نُفتَلُ، فَلَا تَنْصُرُونَا، وَإِنْ رَأَيتُمُونَا قَدْ غَنِمْنَا، فَلاَ تَشْرِكُونَا".
فَلَمَّا غَنِمَ النَّبِيُّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -، وَأَبَاحُوا عَسْكَرَ المُشْرِكِينَ، أَكبَّ الرُّمَاةُ جَميعاً، فَدَخَلُوا فِي العَسْكَرِ يَنْهَبُونَ، وَقَدِ الْتَقَتْ صُفُوفُ أَصحابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -، فَهُمْ هَكَذَا، وَشَبَّكَ بَيْنَ أَصَابعِ يَدَيْهِ، وَالْتَبَسُوا، فَلَمَّا أَخَل الرُّماةُ تِلكَ الخَلَّةَ، الَّتِي كَانُوا فِيهَا، دَخَلَتِ الخَيْلُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ المَوْضِعِ عَلَى أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -، فَضَرَبَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضاً، وَالْتَبَسُوا، وَقُتِلَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ نَاسٌ كَثِيرٌ ... 85 - عَن الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ -رضي الله عنهما- قَالَ: جَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم - عَلَى الرُّمَاةِ -وَكَانُوا خَمْسِينَ رَجُلاً- عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ، وَقَالَ: "إِنْ رَأَيتُمْ العَدُوَّ وَرَأَيتُنم الطَّيْرَ تَخطَفُنَا فَلاَ تَبرَحُوا"، فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا الْغَنَائِمَ قَالُوا: عَلَيْكُمْ الْغَنَائِمَ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: أَلَمْ يَقُلْ رَسُولُ اللهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -: لَا تَبْرَحُوا؟!، قَالَ غَيْرُهُ: فَنَزَلَتْ {وَعَصَيْتُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا أَرَاكُمْ مَا تُحِبُّونَ}، يَقُولُ: عَصَيْتُمْ الرَّسُولَ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا أَرَاكُمْ الْغَنَائِمَ، وَهَزِيمَةَ الْعَدُوِّ ¬أخرجه البخاري برقم: 3039، 3986، 4043، 4067، 4561، وأبو داود برقم: 2662.¥.
