Surah Al-Hujurat — Verse 2

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَرْفَعُوٓا۟ أَصْوَٰتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ ٱلنَّبِىِّ وَلَا تَجْهَرُوا۟ لَهُۥ بِٱلْقَوْلِ كَجَهْرِ بَعْضِكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ أَن تَحْبَطَ أَعْمَـٰلُكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَشْعُرُونَ

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoola tarfaAAoo aswatakum fawqa sawti annabiyyiwala tajharoo lahu bilqawli kajahri baAAdikumlibaAAdin an tahbata aAAmalukumwaantum la tashAAuroon

Saheeh International

O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

believers, do not raise your voices above the Prophet’s, do not raise your voice when speaking to him as you do to one another, or your [good] deeds may be cancelled out without you knowing.

Marmaduke Pickthall

O ye who believe! Lift not up your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor shout when speaking to him as ye shout one to another, lest your works be rendered vain while ye perceive not.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

O ye who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak aloud to him in talk, as ye may speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds become vain and ye perceive not.

Mufti Taqi Usmani

O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, and be not loud when speaking to him, as you are loud when speaking to one another, lest your good deeds should become void while you are not aware.

Al-Hilali & Khan

O you who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), nor speak aloud to him in talk as you speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds should be rendered fruitless while you perceive not.

Abul A'la Maududi (Tafhim)

Believers, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet and when speaking to him do not speak aloud as you speak aloud to one another, lest all your deeds are reduced to nothing without your even realising it.

قال تعالى: {يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ وَلَا تَجْهَرُوا لَهُ بِالْقَوْلِ كَجَهْرِ بَعْضِكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ أَنْ تَحْبَطَ أَعْمَالُكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَشْعُرُونَ (2)} [الحجرات: 2].

279 - عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ رحمه اللهُ قَالَ: كَادَ الْخَيِّرَانِ أَنْ يَهْلِكَا، أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ -رضي الله عنهما-، رَفَعَا أَصْوَاتَهُمَا عِنْدَ النَّبِي - صلى الله عليه وسلم -، حِينَ قَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ رَكْبُ بَنِي تَمِيم، فَأَشَارَ أَحدُهُمَا بِالْأَقْرَع بْنِ حَابِسٍ أَخِي بَنِي مُجَاشِعٍ، وَأَشَارَ الْآخَرُ بِرَجُلٍ آخَرَ، قَالَ نَافِعٌ لَا أَحْفَظُ اسْمَهُ، فَقَال أَبُو بَكْرٍ لِعُمَرَ: مَا أَرَدْتَ إِلَّا خِلَافِي، قَالَ: مَا أَرَدْتُ خِلَافَكَ، فَارْتَفَعَتْ أصَوَاتُهُمَا فِي ذَلِكَ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ: {يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ} الْآيَةَ، قَالَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ: فَمَا كَانَ عُمَرُ يُسْمِعُ رَسُولَ اللهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم - بَعْدَ هَذِهِ الآيَةِ حَتَّى يَسْتَفْهِمَهُ. وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ ذَلِكَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، يَعْنِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ. واللفظ للبخاري ¬أخرجه البخاري برقم: 4845، 7320، والترمذي برقم: 754، وابن جرير: 26/ 119 وفيه التصريح بأنه عن ابن الزبير، وأحمد: 4/ 6 فعلم اتصال الحديث، وقد سبق قبل قليل، وزاد عزوه في الدر: 6/ 84 لابن المنذر والطبراني.¥.
